WHY I WROTE THIS BOOK
After a decadde living in the United States, i realized how much the Reo Tahiti was not practiced in the ʻOri Tahiti Community. Other languages like Hawaiian or Samoan would be used in ʻOri Tahiti Class or in Tahitian dance events. The majority has poor knowledge of the Reo Tahiti and it is because it was never really taught.
I pulled up my sleeves and decided to create a guidebook to help and share as much as i can the Reo Tahiti.
I believe, it is important to use the Tahitian language during an ʻOri Tahiti Class and not mix with other languages as a sign of respect to its native language.
I believe, it is important to have a solid understanding of the Reo Tahiti to become a GREAT ʻOri Tahiti dancer, not just GOOD, but GREAT.
I believe a GREAT dancer need to at least have a basic understanding of the lyrics of a Tahitian song and not just dance to the music and choreography.
I believe practicing the Reo Tahiti is just as important as practicing the ʻOri Tahiti.
The Tahitian language and the Tahitian Culture are the foundation of the ʻOri Tahiti.
This is WHY i have created this resource. It is time for the ʻOri Tahiti community living outside of Tahiti to learn and practice the Reo Tahiti.

I`m Agnes Patko from Hungary. Learning Tahitian dance was my dream since I was a child. However in Hungary it was unknown at that time. Many years later, when I was living in Japan, I finally had the chance to start learning Tahitian dance. I fell in love with it again. After moving back to Hungary, I started my own dance school and continued learning online. We will definitely use this e-book to make our classes more `Tahitian`.
It was such an excellent idea to make this handbook for ｀ori Tahiti dancers. When I attended the training course of the Conservatoire in Papeete and the teachers took notes in Tahitian, I was in trouble. None of the students understood Tahitian, and none of the translation progrmmes knew Tahitian. Later I found a French Tahitian dictionary online, which I used sometimes, but since I had no knowledge of grammar, it was not much help.
The E-book has diverse topics which really help people engage with Tahitian culture. It is translated into 4 languages, contains pronunciation videos and situation videos, which all aid learning. This is a unique resource which most people, who don`t have Tahitian ra`atira or can`t travel to Tahiti to learn from first hand, were missing. Many Polynesian dance schools mix Hawaiian, Tahitian and Samoan so even step names are unclear to students. This book helps both teachers and students to focus on Tahitian and use the correct language.
In addition, personally, when I know some words or phrases in a language I feel closer to that culture. When I can comprehend a few things I feel very happy and motivated to learn more.

As a non-Polynesian who dances ‘ori tahiti, I think it is always important to seek education from primary sources about the Tahitian culture, in order to come from a place of true knowledge, respect, and humility. As a linguist, I have a special appreciation for language as one of the best ways to truly connect with a culture and its people. In addition, Tahiti’s history of colonization remind us of the importance of preserving the fenua’s traditional art and language. I am grateful that there is finally an accessible resource, directly from a native Reo speaker, available for those of us who want to do our best to preserve and propagate the original language, and thereby the original culture, of Tahiti.
